ECUADOR 1 ARGENTINA 1 - MESSI CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR

Argentina earned a vital point in Quito to end Ecuador's 100% home record in the World Cup 2014 qualifiers to move closer to the finals in Brazil.

Lionel Messi started the match from the bench as it was clear that he has not yet returned to full fitness, particularly with the Quito altitude as a factor.

Argentina got off to a perfect start as Palacio was fouled by the Ecuador goalkeeper in the box. Aguero stepped up from the spot and made no mistake.

Ecuador were on level terms in the 16th minute when Castillo headed home from a free-kick that was not well defended by the Argentina rearguard.

Messi was introduced late in the second period and his presence undoubtedly gave his side a lift. The Barcelona man almost got a goal as he raced through on goal but his rasping shot went narrowly wide.

Mascherano was shown a red card for an incident off the pitch with the medical crew which gave the game a bitter aftertaste.
